Introducing CouchDB monitoring (beta)

We’re happy to announce the beta release of Dynatrace CouchDB monitoring! CouchDB server monitoring provides a cluster overview and all relevant nodes metrics.

With CouchDB metrics, you’ll know immediately if your CouchDB installation is under performing. And when problems occur, it’s easy to see which nodes are affected. You can then drill down into the metrics of individual nodes to find the root causes of problems and potential bottlenecks.

To view CouchDB monitoring insights:

  1. From the navigation menu, select Technologies.
  2. Click the Apache CouchDB tile.
    Note that the monitoring of multiple CouchDB clusters isn’t supported in this beta release. All nodes are presented under a single process group.
  3. To view cluster metrics, expand the Details section of the CouchDB process group.
  4. Click the Process group details button. 
  5. On the Process group details page, select the Technology-specific metrics tab. From here you can identify problematic nodes. Just select a relevant time interval for the timeline, select a node metric from the metric drop list, and compare the values of all nodes in the sortable table. To access valuable CouchDB node metrics, select a node from the Process list on the Process group details page.
  6. Click the CouchDB metrics tab.
    Valuable CouchDB node metrics for each CouchDB process page are displayed on the CouchDB metrics tab. With the Requests chart, you’ll know how each node is performing. Above average Maximum request time measurements may indicate that you have some slow requests. Increased Average response time while the number of requests is stable indicates a performance problem. Additionality, you can check HTTP status codes and metrics on the Further details tab. To return to the cluster level, expand the Properties section of the CouchDB Process page and select the cluster.

On the Further details tab you’ll find two tabs and 16 valuable metrics.

Prerequisites

  • CouchDB user with access to  /_stats resource
  • Linux or Windows OS
  • CouchDB 1.5.0+
  • It’s recommended that you install OneAgent on all CouchDB nodes.

Enable CouchDB monitoring globally

With CouchDB monitoring enabled globally, Dynatrace automatically collects CouchDB metrics whenever a new host running CouchDB is detected in your environment.

All CouchDB instances must have the same username and password.

  1. Go to Settings > Monitoring > Monitored technologies.
  2. Set the CouchDB switch to On.
  3. Click the ^ button to expand the details of the CouchDB integration.
  4. Define a User. (user must have access to /_stats)
  5. Define a Password and Port (the default port is 5984).
  6. Click Save.

Enable CouchDB monitoring for individual hosts

Dynatrace provides the option of enabling CouchDB monitoring for specific hosts rather than globally.

  1. If global CouchDB monitoring is currently enabled, disable it by going to Settings > Monitoring > Monitored technologies and setting the CouchDB switch to Off.
  2. From the navigation menu, select Hostsin the navigation menu.
  3. Select the host you want to configure.
  4. Click Edit.
  5. Set the CouchDB switch to On.
